Theatre companies love to define themselves.
Classical to Controversial. Mystery to Musical.
And Everything In Between.
I’ve often wondered how to best define Ignition Theatre and have always struggled to find a
specific word or genre. Some would have you believe we are Central Alberta’s edgy and
provocative theatre company, after all, with productions like Hedwig and the Angry Inch,
Oleanna, Red Light Winter and My Name is Rachel Corrie, how could you blame them?
But for every slice of nudity and every f-bomb, we have productions like Tuesdays With Morrie, Dreamland Saturday Nights, Proof, Marion Bridge and The Shape of a Girl.
And sure, we do mysteries: Deathtrap; and musicals: Tick, Tick...BOOM!, Edges.
And it occurred to me. Ignition Theatre isn’t about one word definitions and the boundaries of
genre, but about compelling and rewarding live theatre experiences. Ignition Theatre is about challenging the medium and our audiences. About exploration, understanding and about not
being afraid. It’s about laughing, crying, jumping out of your skin, getting angry, getting motivated
and getting excited about live theatre.
And with that, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to our
Ignition Theatre 2009/10 line-up, the “little bit of everything” season.
